ABOUT THIS PIECE

All my life, I had been told I was Latinx enough due to not speaking Spanish and/or because I’m very güerita. From people in my hometown to people in Houston. Everyone always had something to say about my identity. 

So this is me Reclaiming Myself. I am the Ocelot, in their proud colors as an Alebije, posing in all their glory under a bright and beautiful Sun and Moon. The Cactus and the Nopales accompany the Ocelot showing strength and resilience.

I did this piece for myself as well as for those who may have also had similar experiences such as this. 

We are Latinx! No one can take that away from us.

ABOUT THIS ARTIST

Karolina-Jude De La Cruz has been an artist since they could remember. From painting and drawing things for their parents from the age of 5 to sketching self-portraits alone at the age of 23, KJ has been creative all their life. Other mediums of art KJ practices include photography and writing.
