ABOUT THIS PIECE

This piece was heavily inspired not only by the slang that is commonly used by valley natives but also by the importance that our tlacuache/opossum population has on our environment. These animals are nature’s natural pesticide and are essential for maintaining balance in our valley ecosystem, without them, we would see an influx of ticks and other pests that are harmful to us and our pets. Plants that are regularly seen throughout the Rio Grande Valley were also included such as sunflowers, cacti, and aloe vera. - Siria Carrasco

ABOUT THIS ARTIST

Siria is an Artist with Honduran heritage and is a 1st generation American. Born with a physical disability, art was a way to cope with the pain of multiple surgeries and hospitalizations. As she was recovering from her surgeries, she was constantly doodling, coloring, and overall trying to be as creative as possible given the circumstances. Born and raised in McAllen, Texas, she was constantly surrounded by ‘Tex-Mex’ culture which served as inspiration for many of her artworks. Siria currently runs her own Etsy Store called La Leona Studios which features some of her artwork. There are still more projects yet to come, so stay tuned!
