ABOUT THIS PIECE

My interpretation of this piece was deeply rooted in preserving the ethnic and cultural background of my family and the community I grew up in. “La Vida es una Loteria” illustrates how living in a different environment challenges you to keep traditional values important from the minority of representation you find yourself questioning in life’s uncertainty.

I found myself in these situations as my family often migrated for job availability, where I had to accommodate to the different lifestyles and the distinct environments. Many times I felt like an outsider as my language caused barriers and the perceptions of how people viewed me, changed. Having the opportunity to depict this image has been a self-discovery journey that I share with my mother's invigoration for a better future and my family’s hard work in agriculture. - Shiara Diaz

ABOUT THIS ARTIST

As a first-generation Mexican American, I feel that my background is a major part of my daily routine, I get to reincorporate what I have learned from my culture and understand differences between shared identities that I incorporate into my art and literature.

My writing dwells on the modern influences that affect and interfere with historical and social justices that actively occur.

I use my art to express the difficulties faced by economic inequalities, access to education and healthcare, and the collapse of our environment.
