All my life I have admired the Tulipan de Monte plant for its beauty and for its resilience to flourish in a region plagued with severe heat and at times droughts. This spectacular plant is known to bloom all summer long and into the fall providing nectar to hummingbirds and our much beloved butterflies.
When creating this piece, I chose to create a bold and vibrant artwork. Therefore, I strategically placed each flower in order to create a balanced and harmonious painting. This was accomplished by making each individual flower visually connect to one another. The placement of each petal and leaf naturally wrapped around the irrigation pipe. I am an artist who loves to create colorful works of art. I conveyed that within my composition by using red and yellow hues to contrast the Aztec blue used on the background. I specifically painted one red tulipan surrounded by yellow ones in order to create a focal point in my composition. -
Olga Escobedo
Olga grew up in a family of migrants. Migrating to different states in order to make ends meet, however for the majority of her life, she has lived in the Rio Grande Valley.
Living in the South Texas area has afforded her the opportunity to experience her Mexican heritage. As a Mexican American living near the border, which divides Mexico and the United States, she was able to witness the impact each neighboring country had on the other. One important aspect of being in this proximately is being raised to appreciate both nationalities.
